Exhibition: “Gabriel García Márquez, Edouard Glissant, the Caribbean: Solitudes and Relation”
Pointe à Pitre, Guadeloupe
December 9, 2017 – April 29, 2018
The Memorial ACTe, Pointe à Pitre (Guadeloupe), and the Museo del Caribe, Barranquilla (Colombia), are contributing to the Year of France-Colombia 2017 an original, joint exhibition called Gabriel García Márquez, Édouard Glissant, the Caribbean: Solitudes and Relation. The exhibition is inspired by the life works of Gabriel García Márquez and Édouard Glissant which interrogate the Caribbean and Caribbean identity.
By way of the contrasting but complementary power of “magic realism” and “the poetics of Relation,” the exhibition tries to identify and reveal not only the rhizomic links that unite the island and mainland territories of our region, but also what it shares with the rest of the world. “Opening up to the Caribbean means opening up to the world,” said Glissant.
Developed on an area of 700 m2 (7,535 ft2), The Caribbean: Solitude and Relation offers the visitor a rhythmic journey of major themes presenting the authors, their writings, their statements and their legacies. It also tells the story of the Caribbean: its unique history and experience that may be part of the response to the challenge which the pair of writers pose to the rest of the world in this emerging 21st century. Archival documents, various iconographies and filmed interviews echo novels and essays on a path marked by works of art and works commissioned to videographers and visual artists.
Faithful to its approach, the Mémorial ACTe shows on this occasion a selection of works from the personal collection of Édouard Glissant, acquired by the Region of Guadeloupe, and presented to the public for the first time.
