Puerto Rican superstar Luis Fonsi was honored by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) with the special Trailblazer Award at the 30th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards on September 14th at the historic Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. According to the HHF, the Awards, which were created by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month in America, are among the highest honors by Latinos for Latinos and supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions that co-host the program. The event will broadcast nationally on October 6 at 10:00pm ET on PBS.
Luis Fonsi joined honorees Gael García Bernal, Alba Colón, Rudy Beserra and the nation’s undocumented youth, the “Dreamers,” as part of the annual celebration.
As Billboard reports, José Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, which hosts for the awards, said “As Latinos continue to make an impact across all fields and industries, Luis Fonsi has made an indelible impression on America and across the globe through his music overall and, specifically, his record-setting single ‘Despacito.’ Luis has represented the spirit of our community through his art for nearly 20 years, culminating with kids and adults across all cultures and languages singing and dancing to his song in Spanish. That is an example of the impact our culture has on America and the globe and why we are very proud to honor Luis with the Trailblazer Award. It’s more important than ever to showcase visionary Latinos like Luis and the other Honorees.”
