Haiti Cultural Exchange’s Mizik Ayiti! Summer Concert Series is back. Happening once a month from June to August, the series showcases musicians and poets of Haitian descent and brings them to the forefront of the New York City performing arts scene. The first concert, described below, will take place on Friday, June 30, 2017, from 6:00 to 9:00pm at Westbrook Memorial Garden, 1233 Pacific Street, Brooklyn, New York (between Bedford and Nostrand Avenues).
This first installment of this 2017 concert series will feature performances by the very first cohort of Lakou NOU artists: Sabine Blaizin, Rodney “Okai” Fleurimont, Veroneque Ignace, and Sherley Davilmar. HCX will also be introducing the 2017 Lakou NOU resident artists. Lakou NOU (“OUR Yard” in Haitian Creole), is HCX’s newest program, providing artists with the opportunity to create and present new work by connecting their skills and talents to four traditionally under-served neighborhoods, home to generations of Haitians and Haitian Americans: Crown Heights, Canarsie, East Flatbush, and Flatbush.
