Garvey the Musical—Roots Reggae Rock, written and directed by Michael Holgate, has won two prestigious Actor Boy Awards (March 2017) in the categories of Best Musical and Best Original Song. The production will run from May 12 – 28, 2017, at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, University of the West Indies-Mona, Jamaica.
The University Players will be remounting the successful and empowering musical theatre production based on the life and impact of Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The production, Garvey the Musical—Roots Reggae Rock will include drama, music and dance and is performed by the University Players with a mixed cast of the University of the West Indies students and alumni along with specially invited guest performers. The production is a musical theatre production that is part civics lesson on the life of National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey and part empowerment education for school youth as well as general audiences. As an edutainment production, it highlights some valuable lessons from a first class Jamaican philosopher in an entertaining production.
