Fundraising Campaign for “The A to Z of Caribbean Art”

M2

Prolific Trinidadian film director and editor of Robert & Christopher Publishers, Mariel Brown, has joined forces with graphic designer, co-editor and compatriot  Melanie Archer to work on a forthcoming volume on art in the Caribbean. The A to Z of Caribbean Art is a comprehensive, visual overview of the development of Caribbean art, from the beginning of the 20th century to now. It will be a rich, illustrated compendium of the greatest artists and artworks of the region. If you decide to make a contribution (of any size) to their campaign, go to Indiegogo. See more on the background and personal commitment to this new production below:

Although my primary work in life is to make films, because I grew up in a house where there was always art on the walls and writers and artists visiting, I have a deep commitment to documenting the arts of the Caribbean – it’s something I have done in film, with The Solitary Alchemist, and as a writer I have written about artists such as Roberta Stoddart and Lisa O’Connor for Caribbean magazines. In addition, since 2006, I have been working with a tiny imprint, Robert & Christopher Publishers, managing two book projects (Barbara Jardine: Goldsmith and Meiling: Fashion Designer) and co-editing two more (Pictures from Paradise and See Me Here).

For the past year and a half, I’ve been working on developing a new book project for Robert & Christopher, with my friend and co-editor, Melanie Archer. The A to Z of Caribbean Art is a comprehensive, visual overview of the development of Caribbean art, from the beginning of the 20th century to now. It will be a rich, illustrated compendium of the greatest artists and artworks of the region, and will be a must-have for art-lovers, schools, universities and libraries in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and beyond.

[. . .] We have completed about 50% of the research involved in making a seminal book such as this. We’ve built out extensive artists’ lists, reached out across the islands, and hired a researcher. We have a designer on board; we’ve got print quotes and a marketing plan. We are so close to our April 2018 publication date, but we need to raise our printing costs in order to publish this book.
