New Books: “Cuba Stone”

tusquets

Cuba Stone (Tusquets, 2016) is a collection of chronicles, in Spanish, inspired by the landmark free concert delivered by The Rolling Stones in Havana’s Ciudad Deportiva on March 25, 2016. Written by three Latin American writers—Argentine journalist Javier Sinay; Joselo, writer and guitarist of the Mexican band Café Tacvba; and Peruvian writer and journalist Jeremías Gamboa—the book gathers first impressions and reactions to the concert. The premise is interesting; although, having spent time in Cuba for extended research trips and/or to attend conferences, I find that the claim that Cubans had never been exposed to Rolling Stones music is quite an exaggeration. Nevertheless, the collection marks a momentous event in Cuban-U.S. relations. [Also see previous post CUBA: CROWDS GATHER FOR LANDMARK ROLLING STONES CONCERT.]

Description (by Planeta de Libros): In March 2016, during the “América Latina Olé Tour,” British band The Rolling Stones played for the first time in Cuba, in a free recital that took place in the Ciudad Deportiva in Havana. On Good Friday, just after the visit of President Barack Obama, the country’s first president to tread Cuban soil in eighty-eight years, the Stones played before a crowd whose exact number is still under discussion: were there 500,000 people or 1,200,000? At the recital, there were fans from other countries, who did not want to miss what promised to be the most exciting concert by the band—there were actors, journalists and, of course, Cubans who, in their vast majority, due to the conditions imposed by the Castro regime, had never heard songs by the Rolling Stones. Argentine journalist Javier Sinay; Joselo, writer and guitarist of the Mexican band Café Tacvba; and Peruvian writer and journalist Jeremías Gamboa traveled to Cuba to witness this strange experiment—that head-on clash between the world’s longest-lived rock band and a town that awakened to its music just in recent years. This book contains the chronicles that the three wrote about that recital that became a historical event.
