On Monday, hundreds of thousands of Cuban citizens and Revolutionary Armed Forces personnel celebrated 60 years since the private yacht Granma landed on Cuban shores.

Stocked with weapons and Cuban revolutionary cadre such as Fidel and Raul Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos and Che Guevara, the landing marked the beginning of an expedition aimed at toppling the dictator Fulgencio Batista and ending Cuba’s subservience to U.S. imperialism and its local puppets.

Some of those marching held up images of Fidel with others holding banners reading “We are Fidel.” While the parade normally takes place every five years on Dec. 2, it was postponed for a month due to his death at the age of 90 in late November.

Mexico City merchant and weapons expert Antonio del Conde, nicknamed “The Friend,” met Fidel Castro in the 1950s and bought him the yacht that was used to sail from Mexico to spark the insurgency against the corrupt dictatorship.

“I have no words,” del Conde said in an interview at his home in Mexico City. “He changed my life, like he changed the lives of many people in different countries around the world.” Del Conde is also 90 years old.

The march also comes amidst signs that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will adopt a more aggressive policy against the socialist nation once he is inaugurated.
