On Saturday, January 7, 2017, starting at 8:00pm, L’Artchipel Scène Nationale de la Guadeloupe presents VOUKOUM Dékatman lapo a kabrit. The Dékatman Mas celebrates the country’s African heritage and blending of cultures. Including drumming, dance, and traditional costumed performers, the celebration will take place in the garden of L’Artchipel, located at Boulevard du gouverneur général Félix Eboué, in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe.
L’Artchipel’s site explains: The “Dékatman Mas” presents itself as a ceremony dedicated to our Ancestors in gratitude for the legacy they have bequeathed us. “Mas” is a fundamental element of our culture, an autochthonous “Potomitan.” Like all ceremonies the “Dékatman Mas” begins with a purification of the “lawonn-la” space by rolls of incense before the invocation and the evocation of the “Mas.” In search of the sacred meaning of the scattered cultural elements that remain to us, we create our own mystical approach to understanding the past, conquering our future and appropriating it in our own way.
