Latin Grammy 2016 Winners

Maria G. Valdez (Latin Times) reports on the 2016 Latin Grammy Awards, saying that everyone is talking about Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony sharing a kiss after their performance of Pimpinella’s 1984 hit “Olvídame y Pega la Vuelta.” She adds that newcomer Manuel Medrano performed and won “the hearts of all of us,” and about Farruko and Ky-Mani Marley’s successful “Mannequin Challenge” as part of their show. Among the winners were Colombians Carlos Vives, Shakira, Fonseca, and J Balvin; Venezuelan band Guaco; Dominican duo Jesse & Joy; Puerto Ricans India and Yandel, and Cubans Gente De Zona and Arturo O’Farrill. Valdez writes:

Truth is, this year’s Latin Grammy exceeded everyone’s expectations, from the artists who performed to the ones who won.

This year was a bit special, since people were shocked when the nominations were announced, as there weren’t a lot of mainstream names. Fonseca, who was among the top nominees with four nods, took home two gramophones. Juan Gabriel and Shakira and Carlos Vives’ “La Bicicleta” also took two awards home each. Veteran rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, legendary Mexican regional band Los Tigres del Norte and reggaeton extraordinaire Yandel were also among the artists who scored two Latin Grammys each. And last, but not least, newcomer Manuel Medrano went home with two awards.

Jesse & Joy, who were among the most nominated of the night, won one Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album with “Un Besito Más,” and J Balvin, who last year won his first-ever Latin Grammy, was happy to add another one to his collection for Best Urban Music Album with “Energía.”
