Cuban Tourism Growing

Prensa Latina reports that latest figures indicate that Cuban tourism is on a steady rise. Canada is at the top of the market list, followed by the Cuban community abroad and the United States.

The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Information (ONEI) state that in the first semester of the year, Cuba received 2,147,919 foreign tourists, for an 11.7 percent rise compared with data in similar period in 2015.

The Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) has Canada in its top market list, followed by the Cuban community abroad and the United State for 61.2-percent growth, despite the travels from that country are still restricted. The United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Argentina and France also lead as for markets, all of them with increases in sending, mainly Germans with 69.2 percent.

But behind the figures, there is an effort ordered by MINTUR to increase the amount of money of the island tourism, when they even already announced that Cuba will have a hotel capacity of 85,000 rooms by 2020. At present, the island has 63,000 rooms. Those efforts are combined with a remodeled economy, supporting private accommodations and restaurants, and other modalities that help in the recreational industry. Airlines such as Condor, Air Berlin and Eurowings, have increased tourism from Europe, while the latest news is in direct U.S. flights to the island.
