Decimanía: Musicians from Puerto Rico and the Canary Islands to Gather in New York


Decimanía de Puerto Rico, Inc. is a nonprofit cultural and educational organization devoted to the dissemination and preservation of Puerto Rican folk music expressions, particularly the décima– a Spanish poetic form and folksong which is often improvised. Decimanía is proudly presenting in New York a series of events that will highlight the folklore of Puerto Rico and the Canary Islands as well as the performance of improvised décimas.

Decimistas en New York will feature some of the most versed and creative performers of improvised décimas. The Puerto Rican tradition will be represented by award-winning troubadours: Omar Santiago, Roberto Silva, Jovino González, Arturito Santiago, Rey Rodríguez, Edgardo Delgado, Samuel Quijano, Jonathan Nieves, and children singers trained in thedécima tradition. They will be accompanied by the ensemble Conjunto Típico Samaritano. Straight from the Canary Islands, and for the first time playing together in New York: Yeray Rodríguez Quintana, who is one of the leading figures in the current practice of improvised décimas; singer Pedro Manuel Alfonso; timple player Domingo Rodríguez “El Colorao” and guitarist Javier Cerpa.

Puerto Rican décimas and aguinaldos will meet Canarian folías and puntos through the voices and ingenuity of these experienced trovadores. Their performances in New York will mark an unprecedented musical celebration that will certainly bring together the musical traditions and cultural connections between Puerto Rico and the Canary Islands.
