Caribbean Week-New York returns

The 2016 “Caribbean Week in New York” is only seven days long, but the comprehensive collection of industry-only and public events by the Caribbean Tourism Organization headquarters in Barbados and the CTO office in lower Manhattan had been a year in the making.

Caribbean heads of state, government ministers, travel industry executives and other VIPs will be convening for Caribbean Week, which includes some public events:

  • A church service Sunday in Brooklyn at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 331 Hawthorne St., from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • This year’s Caribbean Week’s celebrity chefs demonstrations include culinary experts from Anguilla, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica and are being hosted by Bloomingdale’s 59th St., Williams-Sonoma Columbus Circle and Bloomingdale’s White Plains at various times during the week.
  • The free Caribbean student colloquium, “Students Taking Center Stage: A Forum for Rising Stars in Caribbean Tourism,” takes place Wednesday at the New York Marriott Marquis, Marquis Ballroom B, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with students from Caribbean colleges and universities competing.   • The Rum & Rhythm Benefit and Auction: The Ultimate Caribbean Epicurean Experience, will be held Friday at Capitale, 130 Bowery, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., sponsored by Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and the Cayman Islands.
  • Caribbean Rocks Concert, sponsored by Tempo Networks at B.B. King Blues Club, 237 W. 42nd St., next Sunday at 7 p.m., includes performances by Romain Virgo, R. City (Rock City), Cecile, Loyal Flames, Ziggy Ranking, Isaac Blackman, RKG, soca stars Kerwin Dubois and Shurwayne Winchester, rising star Arita and special performance by the Mighty Sparrow.The Caribbean Rocks sponsoring nations – the Bahamas, Barbados, Turks and Caicos and St. Kitts-Nevis — will present entertainment showcases.Go to bit.ly/caribbeanrocks2016 for tickets and visit www.gottempo.com/caribbeanrocks-nyc for information.
