South Carolina Caribbean Culture and Heritage, Inc will pay tribute to the Indentured Servants of India and China who traveled from their homeland to make a new home in the various Caribbean islands and provide a workforce after the abolition of slavery. Dr Aisha Khan Professor of Anthropology New York University, will offer a presentation on Caribbean Indentured Heritage on Thursday, June 23, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the College of Charleston North, signaling the commencement of the celebrations in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month.
Professor Khan, a descendant of the Indentured people will lead the discussion following the presentation.
On Saturday, June 25, the Carnival Street Parade starts at 4:00 PM from the Visitor’s Center and travels on John Street, down King Street to Sumter Street to Hagood Street to Fishburne into Brittle Bank Park.
The Grand Finale at Brittle Bank Park starts at 5:00 PM on Saturday, June 25. The cultural celebration includes cultural dances, International Caribbean Artists performing Reggae, and Soca music, Food and Arts & Craft Vendors.
