Olive Senior has won the 2016 Bocas Literary Prize for her collection of short stories The Pain Tree. She had won the Non-fiction category in 2015 for Dying To Better Themselves: West Indians and the Building of the Panama Canal.
Senior had shared the short list with Tiphanie Yanique (nominated for her book of poems, Wife) and Jacqueline Bishop for The Gymnast and Other Positions. It was the first time that three women writers vied for the Bocas Prize.
Dionne Bran, in announcing the overall winner, had praised the finalists’ texts as beautifully written and deeply engaging texts. Senior, in accepting her prize, equally praised her fellow winners, particularly Bishop, who was present at the award ceremony (Yanique was absent, having only recently welcomed a child), for whom she expressed an deep admiration.
