Puerto Rican tennis player Monica Puig has reached the third round of the Australian Open following a spirited match against Czech player Kristyna Pliskova, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 9-7.
A WTA record 31 aces from Pliskova wasn’t enough to win against a focused and determined Puig in what commentators described as en “epic match” lasting two hours and twenty minutes. It is Puig’s first ever victory against Pliskova and it was clearly the match of the day at the Australian Open.
Puig, who is currently ranked 52 in the world, will very likely see her ranking move up after reaching the finals at the Sydney tournament last week and reaching the third round today at the Australian Open.
She is facing a very touch third-round match against the world’s 4th-ranked player, Agnieszka Radwanska, who today sent a message of intent to her title rivals at Australian Open 2016 with a dazzling second-round display to defeat Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard 6-4 6-2 .
