ICS Lectures: “Conferencias Caribeñas” January-May 2016

The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras has announced the preliminary schedule of the “Conferencias Caribeñas” [Caribbean Lectures] for the second semester of the 2015-2016 academic year, to be delivered from January to May 2016. The following program is subject to changes:

Week of January 25 to 29: “Crisis, What Crisis?”

Week of February 15 to 19: “Carnaval p’allá y p’acá” [Carnival There, Here and Everywhere in Between] Prof. Rawle Gibbons (Creative Arts Centre, University of the West Indies-St. Augustine); Dr. Nadjah Rivers Villarini (English Department, School of General Studies, UPR-RP); and Dr. Lowell Fiet (Institute of Caribbean Studies and School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP)

Week of February 29 to March 4: The Gordon K. and Sybil Farrell Lewis Memorial Lecture—“Inauguration of the Sidney W. Mintz – Gordon K. Lewis Collections of the Social Sciences Archives,” Drs. Richard and Dr. Sally Price (independent researchers, Martinique/Paris, France)

Week of March 14 to 18: “New Directions: Works in Progress”

Week of April 4 to 8: “The Multiple Identities of Caribbean Music”

Week of April 18 to 22: “Dutch Islands, Jewish Culture?” Dr. Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger (Department of African Studies: Literature and Culture, Humboldt University, Berlin)

Week of April 25 to 29: “Dominican Memories: The April Revolution”

Friday, May 6: “The Multilingual Caribbean,” Dr. Nicholas Faraclas and Dannabang Kuwabong (Caribbean Linguistics, School of the Humanities, UPR-RP)
