The Amherst College Department of Spanish invites applications for a full-time tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, to begin July 2016. This appointment will be contingent upon a positive tenure review.

We seek a scholar-teacher whose research and teaching agenda focuses on Caribbean and/or Latin American literature and culture. The historical period and specialty areas are open. We are particularly interested in candidates who would welcome the opportunity to play a leadership role in shaping the future of the department and to engage students and colleagues in reconfiguring the department’s cultural programming so that it reflects the full diversity of hispanophone communities.

Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion.

A Ph.D., native fluency in Spanish, and fluency in English are required. Teaching duties include two courses per semester, academic advising, and directing undergraduate theses.

Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2016, and continue until the position is filled.  Candidates should submit a letter of application that addresses research and teaching, CV, writing sample, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Questions may be addressed to:  Professor Leah Schmalzbauer at lschmalzbauer@amherst.edu.

Amherst College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college for women and men, with 1,800 students and more than 200 faculty members, is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The College is especially committed to enriching students’ educational experience and the institutional culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff. Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts in the Five-College Consortium.
