South Florida Caribbean News announced that Dr. Angela Y. Davis will participate in a public conversation titled America’s Most (Un)Wanted Fight Back: Ending Criminalization and the Prison Industrial Complex. The event takes place this evening—Thursday, December 17 at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:00pm)—at Barry University’s Shepard and Ruth K. Broad Performing Arts Center (located at 11300 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores, Florida.

Critical Resistance, Dream Defenders and Power U Center for Social Change will host America’s Most (Un)Wanted Fight Back: Ending Criminalization and the Prison Industrial Complex, a public conversation with Dr. Angela Y. Davis. The event is a fundraiser for all three organizations.

As one of the most prominent US political figures of our time, Angela Davis will draw from her recent books and decades of activism and expertise to explore current crises of imprisonment and criminalization in the US and internationally and the possibilities for systemic change and Black liberation. Davis will be joined in conversation with three organizations at the forefront of movements for racial justice and prison industrial complex abolition in Florida and nationally.

“At the same time that we see wider economic disparity, greater environmental devastation, and increased state violence at home and abroad, we also see more creative, hopeful, and energetic movements for change,” explained Davis.  “I hope this conversation will help to encourage social, political, and cultural activism that strives to build a better, more empowering, and sustainable future.”

The event builds upon weeks of community dialogues led by local residents and organizations exploring alternatives to imprisonment and policing.

“We view this historic conversation as an opportunity to work on anti-criminalization issues in Miami and demonstrate how our work is connected to liberation movements in other parts of the country and around the world,” said Hashim Bedford, Executive Director of Power U Center for Social Change. “We also hope that people will walk away inspired by and connected to all the innovative community organizing that is happening in this city.”

Individual tickets for the event are $25.00. Scholarships are available to ensure that the event is accessible to the entire community. There are also opportunities to support the event through sponsorship. For more information, please visit: bit.ly/angeladavismia
