Earl Lovelace

The second Tobago NGC Bocas Lit Fest took place on 9-11 July at the Scarborough Library Facility, Trinidad’s Express reports . The Tobago festival celebrates the island’s literary and oral traditions. In 2015, the Festival paid tribute to one of the Caribbean’s most accomplished writers, Earl Lovelace, who turned 80 last Monday.

The festival kicked off on Thursday (July 9) with film screenings of Lovelace’s work – Joebell and America, George and the Bicycle Pump and the documentary, A Writer In His Space. On Friday (July 10) members of the Tobago Writers Guild paid tribute to the respected author via selected readings of Lovelace’s work. There was also a conversation with Lovelace, who penned the Caribbean classics The Dragon Can’t Dance, Salt–winner of the 1997 Commonwealth Writers Prize–and Is Just A Movie, which won the 2012 OCM Bocas Prize.

Saturday’s (July 11) programme included storytelling, creative writing workshops, an open-mic session, literary readings and discussions, and music.

The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago is title sponsor of the Tobago NGC Bocas Lit Fest. Other supporters of the Festival included the Tobago House of Assembly and the Massy Foundation.

  1. In anglophone reports it is never mentioned that “Is Just a Movie” also won the Grand Prix Litteraire Caribeen du Conseil Regional (now the Grand Prix Litteraire des Ecrivains de la Caraibe) in Guadeloupe in 2011. It is an important biennial prize of 10,000 euros open to works of prose or poetry from the entire Caribbean in whatever language. Betty Wilson
