Haiti will host the 12th Caribbean Festival of Arts, known as CARIFIESTA, the biggest cultural event organized by the Caribbean Community.

In a short statement, CARICOM said CARIFIESTA will run from Aug. 21-30, showcasing the cultural expressions of artists from 30 countries across the Caribbean region.

CARIFIESTA was initiated by the heads of government of CARICOM in 1972 to “foster a vision of Caribbean unity and to positively advance Caribbean culture regionally and internationally.”

The 10th edition of the event was celebrated in Guyana in 2008, while the 11th took place in Suriname in 2013.

CARICOM is composed of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago

  1. ESCUSE ME, BUT THE CARIBBEAN IS COMPOSED OF THE MAJOR ANTILLES AND THE MINOR ANTILLES. I PERCEIVED A TINGE OF ANTI-HISPANIC SUGGESTIVE EXCLUSION IN CARICOM AND ON THIS EVENT.
THE WAY I READ IT IS THAT SOMEBODY DOES NOT LIKE SOMEBODY IN THE CARIBBEAN EDEN AND THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO CELEBRATE IT. ALABAO!!! NO WONDER THE AFRO-CUBANS ARE BEING VICTIMIZED DESPITE THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF EXISTENCE!!! AND ABOUT THE AFRO-BRAZILLIANS, NI SE DIGA!!! ESTAMOS JODIOS COMADRES Y COMPADRES!!! ASHE PA’ TO’!!!!

  2. The final sentence of this press item, “CARICOM is composed of Antigua and Barbuda, […] and Trinidad and Tobago,” is inauspiciously placed. Perhaps inadvertently, it suggests that these are the only countries participating in Carifesta. Carifesta has long been a wider Caribbean event. For example, already in 1979 Carifesta was hosted by Cuba. A better recent press item can be found here: https://repeatingislands.com/2015/05/19/carifesta-xii-begins-august-21-in-haiti.
