Trumpeter Etienne Charles, with saxophonist Brian Hogans, pianist Sullivan Fortner, guitarist Alex Wintz, bassist Ben Williams, drummer John Davis, and vocalist Keet Styla, will perform this Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center. (The musician was recently awarded a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship–congratulations!)
Description: For his return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Charles will present music from Creole Soul, the 2013 album that reached No. 1 on the JazzWeek charts. For this project, the band uses jazz as a foundation to engage 20th century Caribbean folk and pop traditions, with musical elements from Trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti, and Martinique. Most of the compositions are originals, grounded in jazz but heavily influenced by the sounds and rhythms of the Caribbean, with a likely emphasis on the Afro-Caribbean tradition of calypso music. Charles’ other selections range from Bob Marley to Bo Diddley and Thelonious Monk, each chosen for its thematic relevance and handled with care and originality.
