Exhibition ‘Gabriel García Márquez and the Caribbean’ in Sto. Domingo

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the passing away of one of the great writers of world literature and winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the Embassy of Colombia in Dominican Republic and the International Book Fair of Santo Domingo have developed an exciting program of cultural activities in his honor. The program constitutes Colombia’s participation in the Santo Domingo Book Fair.

It includes an exhibition, a film series, lectures, talks, a painting competition, performances as well as a sample of Colombian cuisine. The exhibition ‘Gabriel García Márquez and the Caribbean’ consists of 16 screens about the life and work of the famous writer. It is being presented in the basement of the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Colombian novelist and journalist, was the creator of classics like Cien años de soledad, El amor en los tiempos del cólera, El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, El otoño del patriarca and Crónica de una muerte anunciada. He was born in Aracataca and was the creator of a timeless territory called Macondo, a place where reality coalesces with imagination, myth, dream and desire.
