In “Fantasy Meets Folk Art: Afro-Caribbean Inspired Paintings by Paul Lewin,” Paul Caridad (Visual News) reports on Jamaican-born artist Paul Lewin and the impact of Afro-Caribbean imagery on his work. Raised in Miami, Florida, Lewin is now based in Oakland, California. Caridad writes that “Lewin has a unique style that includes traditional Caribbean and African motifs as well as science fiction.”

Lewin explains, “The work reflects on the journey of my ancestors through the diaspora and of ourselves today as our stories continue to unfold. In the Caribbean much of the folklore has been passed down from generation to generation, dating back to ancient Africa, and kept alive through the traditional art of storytelling.”
