ICS Hosts Screening of “Venezuela, la lucha sigue”

The Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP), invites the academic community and the general public the screening of Venezuela, la lucha sigue [Venezuela, The Struggle Continues] by director and producer Eduardo Aguiar. The screening will take place on Wednesday, February 11, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at the Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre (CRA 108) of the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building, School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP.

Description: Venezuela, la lucha sigue [Venezuela, The Struggle Continues] was filmed shortly after the death of Hugo Chávez in March 2013. A Puerto Rican group of documentary filmmakers, with Spanish journalist Iñaki Estibaliz, went to the South American country to collect the opinions of Venezuelans on the achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution. This work shows some of the results after 14 years of Chavez’s government, from the point of view of ordinary people, protagonists of a process of change towards social justice still maintaining a steady confrontation with old oligarchic elites. The discovery of oil in 1902 created the conditions for economic, and political inequalities that are at the service of foreign interest. For over sixty years the people of Venezuela have been struggling to create a society with a better distribution of wealth and social justice. Venezuela, la lucha sigue is a feature length documentary that traces the history of oppression and struggle in that country since the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jimenez. It examines the emergence to power of Hugo Chávez, the development of the Bolivarian Revolution, and the future of socialism in that country.
