The Environment Ministry announced the indefinite suspension of the contract with the company Marinarium to operate an ecotourism project at Laguna Bávaro wildlife refuge, La Altagracia province. The company, located in the eastern Dominican Republic in Cabeza de Toro, between the areas of Bávaro and Punta Cana, offered tours and excursions to explore the coast, coral reefs, and marine life, while creating “a model sustainable ecological conservation area in which part of the revenue from ecotourism” was used to support environmental conservation and educational activities.
According to Dominican Today, in the papers served on the company, the Environment Ministry says the suspension will stand until its representatives reach an agreement with the owners of the land which serves as access to the protected area. It adds that the decision came after an in-depth study of the documents submitted separately by the La Altagracia Tourism Cluster and the Valdez family inheritors.
