Sixteen-year-old Saint International model Tami Williams is French Elle’s December cover girl. The feat is historic on many levels, as Jamaica’s Gleaner reports.
Williams is the first Caribbean/Jamaican model, and the youngest black model to grace the prestigious publication’s cover page. This accolade, earned only nine months after first setting foot on the international stage, places the leggy Jamaican teen among the fastest-rising black supermodels in history.
Williams joins a legion of top cover stars, including Lupita Nyong’o, Rihanna, Jasmine Tookes (Victoria Secrets supermodel), and Estée Lauder spokesperson (supermodel) Liya Kibede. In the age of actors asfashion magazine-cover models, many industry insiders see William’s cover as a refreshing departure.
It is also extremely rare that such a new model (working for less than a year) would grace such a cover. “This is a watershed moment in global fashion for Saint International and Jamaica,” says Saint boss and founder, Deiwght Peters.
No doubt an early Christmas gift for both model and agency, the FrenchElle cover was shot in Paris and executed by a powerful creative team, led by photographer Takay, stylist Hortense Manga, hair by Phophie Mathias, and make-up artist Marion Anee.
“This epic milestone places Tami on the path of legendary supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, who earned her first cover at a similar young age,” says Peters.
He notes that Williams’ ambitions extend beyond the moment, as she envisions a career spanning decades. Saint and its affiliate agencies say they are working in concert to develop and position Tami as a global lifestyle brand over the next decade, with appearances in television and brand-endorsement deals.
The French Elle is a major career booster for the young model who fashion insiders tip to be among the next generation of true supermodels.
The Jamaican teen’s meteoric rise to the top of the fashion world has been nothing short of spectacular. Discovered by Peters at age 12, Williams debuted on the world fashion scene this past February (at age 15) with an exclusive appearance at Alexander Wang (New York Fashion Week) followed by high-profile runway appearances for Marc Jacobs in New YorkFashion Week.
Fashionistas looked in wonder when she rocked European runways for Marni, Alberta Ferretti and Valentino.
At the Spring 2015 Collections this past September, Williams captivated global fashion power-players strutting at New York Fashion Week for Calvin Klein, Richard Chai, Phillip Lim, Jill Stuart, and several others. In Europe, she made her first entry into London Fashion Week for the likes of fashion legends Marios Schwab (which she closed) and Giles Deacon.
In Milan, she starred for many, including Dolce & Gabbana, SportsMax & Pucci, alongside supermodels Naomi Campbell, Joan Smalls, among many others. In Paris, she clocked for world elite brands such as Vionnet, Kenzo, Balmain, Lanvin, & Hermés.
Williams was named among the top new faces in the fashion world by fashion industry’s respected model-ranking sites Models.com andStyle.com.
