Casa de las Americas (Havana, Cuba) is hosting the International Seminar: “The Role of Culture in Today’s Caribbean: Contexts and Challenges” [Papel de la cultura en el Caribe hoy: contextos y desafíos] from September 29 to October 3, 2014. Sessions, lectures and workshops will take place at the Casa de las Americas’ Manuel Galich Room and other venues such as the Alliance Française and the Ludwig Foundation [Alianza Francesa (15 y J, Vedado);  Fundación Ludwig (13 y D, Vedado)]. There will also be a series of organized visits to community-led cultural projects.

Besides the many stimulating presentations in the planned sessions, there will be four keynote speeches by Dr. Anja Bandau (El Caribe y las paradojas de su construcción), Dr. Richard Price (La religión como corazón de la cultura Saramaka), Dr. Sally Price (El arte de los cimarrones: Desde el bosque tropical hasta la economía global), and Dr. Félix Valdés (Perspectivas del conocimiento para la realidad del Caribe, problemas y desafíos).

A series of workshops will be led by Jean Frédéric Chevallier (Alianza Francesa)—Prácticas culturales contemporáneas y trabajo en comunidad: proyección social y cuestionamiento estético en el Caribe—and Alanna Lockward (Fundación Ludwig), who will also curate the collective exhibition “Ofrenda” [Offering] with participating artists Yeins Gómez Sousa, Lilliam Cedeño, Javier Soto, Edel Alonso, Sandra Rodríguez, Emmanuel Días, and Ictiandro L. Rodríguez.
