[Based on a news report from Acento.com.do, 19 August 2014.] Congresswoman Minou Tavarez Mirabal, daughter of national heroes Minerva Mirabal and Manuel Aurelio Tavárez Justo (Manolo), was upset by President Danilo Medina’s recent choice to head the Army, whom she referred to as the son of her father’s murderer.
Minou Tavárez was referring to Major General José Eugenio Matos de la Cruz—appointed chief of the Army of the Dominican Republic. Matos Cruz is the son of Ramiro Matos—a retired general from the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, the Triumvirate, and Joaquín Balaguer—who was accused of killing the leader of the Revolutionary Movement 14 de Junio: her father, Manolo Tavárez. She expressed her dismay via her Twitter account @minoutavarezm.
