According to Tony Cruz, co-director of Beta-Local and program director of La Práctica [The Practice], on June 6, 2014, the cultural organization received a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts: $80,000 spread over the next two years. These funds will be used for the production of work by artists from Puerto Rico and abroad through the various programs that Beta-Local offers. [I take this opportunity to congratulate Beta-Local and to my co-blogger, Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert, also a recipient of this prestigious grant.]
To celebrate this achievement and to raise funds to carry out the next cycle La Práctica, Beta-Local invites the community to their fundraising party this coming Thursday, June 19, starting at 6:30pm. The festivities will be held on the rooftop of the Walter Otero Contemporary Art Gallery at 402 Constitution Avenue in Puerta de Tierra, San Juan, Puerto Rico. There will be an open bar for $25 and music by the band La Exitosa, with the participation of artists Michael Linares, Bubu Negrón, Pablo Guardiola, Yoyo Rodríguez, and César Reyes.
“Having the budget to commission and produce new projects and to support the work of a broad range of artists is something we have been working on for the past 4 years, and I am honored to receive this recognition and support,” said Cruz. “Our board, staff, and all the artists who have worked with us since we opened our doors in November 2009 are part of this achievement,” added Michy Marxuach, co-director and founder of Beta-Local.
During the past four years, Beta-Local—a nonprofit organization—has driven artistic and cultural practices in Puerto Rico through collaborative processes, experimentation, and critical thinking. Through La Práctica—an interdisciplinary program focusing on research and production—Beta-Local supports projects that rethink the networks of cultural production on the island and catalyze processes of social change.
