2014 Read My World Festival Amsterdam dedicated to Caribbean literature

A post by Peter Jordens.

On September 12, 13 and 14, 2014, the Tolhuistuin [‘Toll House Garden’, an art venue in North Amsterdam, the Netherlands] will be fully dedicated to Caribbean literature, poetry and stories. Read My World will explore the interface between literature and journalism and draw attention to everything in between. In the three rooms and the idyllic garden of the Tolhuistuin, one may expect a rich program of sweltering recitals, honest interviews, a Literary Potpourri, a Poet Marathon, Spoken Beat Night, and music. It will be a lively combination of ideas and dreams, humor and passion, politics and journalism – courtesy of more than 80 authors and artists from the Netherlands, Flanders (Belgium), and the Caribbean.

The politically engaged writer and poet Ruel Johnson (Guyana), feminist novelist Kettly Mars (Haiti) and critical theatrical producer and columnist Sharda Ganga (Suriname) have been asked to give shape to the program of the second edition of this international literature festival of Amsterdam. In turn, the three guest curators will select the most innovative literary voices of their region: talented writers, outspoken poets and provocative spoken-word artists from Jamaica, Guyana, Suriname, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. They will introduce the audience to literary and social developments in the Caribbean and will invite debate, exchange and reflection.

Read My World is an international literary documentary festival that each year focuses on an area of the world in which major social changes are taking place. It is a festival where literature is exhibited in all its hybrid forms. It offers a space for debate and performance, for unknown as well as established talent, both experimental and bestselling authors; playwrights will join bloggers, while poets will share the stage with journalists.
