A post from Peter Jordens.
In honor of the 80th anniversary of Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén’s collection of poems called West Indies Ltd., the Nicolás Guillén Foundation presents:
The 9th International Music and Poetry Festival and Colloquium dedicated to Nicolás Guillén: “By the Caribbean Sea”
April 8-11, 2014
The West Indies Ltd. poems of Nicolás Guillén (1902-1989), published in 1934, confirm Cuba’s National Poet’s very early interest in the nearest and dearest surroundings of his island: the Caribbean. On the occasion of their 80th anniversary, the Nicolás Guillén Foundation dedicates its regular International Music and Poetry Festival and Colloquium to these poems and, above all, to the geographical and cultural area that inspired them. All interested parties are invited to a conversation on the Caribbean: its economy, culture, problems, in sum: its life.
In addition to music and poetry recitals, concerts of popular, symphonic and choral music, a visual arts exhibition and related music and poetry activities, the event will include a colloquium of lectures, special presentations, panels, and paper presentations.
Suggested general topics for papers:
1. Caribbean diversity/heterogeneity versus unity/homogeneity in their various aspects.
2. Nicolás Guillén’s relationship with the region from the point of view of poetry and his own life experience/relationships with Caribbean nations and persons.
3. Studies of West Indies Ltd.
Those interested in participating with a paper at the event should submit their paper’s title, a brief summary of its contents, as well as their personal information: name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and the institution that they represent (if any).
The event also accepts participants as observers or companions. These participants too should submit their personal information.
The relevant information should be submitted to:

The Nicolas Guillen Foundation was created in 1991 under the auspices of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the poet’s family. Its mission is the preservation, study and distribution of the literary work of this great poet, thereby contributing to dissemination and knowledge of Cuba’s best cultural values.
