Martin, Calle 13, Draco Among Puerto Rican Celebs in News This Year

The publication of pop star Ricky Martin’s first children’s book, Draco Rosa’s cancer relapse and hip-hop duo Calle 13’s collaboration with Julian Assange were among the top stories from Puerto Rico’s entertainment world in 2013.

Martin’s “Santiago the Dreamer in Land Among the Stars” was released in November and was the second book he has published after his autobiography, “Me.”

The 32-page book, published by Celebra – a celebrity imprint of the Penguin Group – and featuring illustrations by Spanish artist Patricia Castelao, tells the story of Santiago, a boy who dreams of performing on stage, and his father, who believes in his son’s potential.

A day after Martin’s book was published, Calle 13 released the rap-rock track “Multi_Viral,” the first single from the like-named album due to hit the market on March 1.

The song, which denounces media manipulation and hails the importance of social-protest movements, includes fragments of a speech by Assange.

Residente, Calle 13’s frontman, worked on the track with the WikiLeaks’ founder at Ecuador’s embassy in London, where the Australian citizen has been holed up since mid-2012 after losing a court battle in Britain to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of sexual misconduct.

Assange denies the accusations and fears that once he is in Swedish custody Washington will indict him for espionage and pressure Stockholm into handing him over.

WikiLeaks disseminated thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables, as well as a video that showed an American military helicopter crew killing a Reuters photographer and several other civilians in Iraq.

Also collaborating on “Multi_Viral” were guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave and Palestinian singer Kamilya Jubran.

Finally, in early December, singer-songwriter Draco Rosa announced that his cancer had returned.

Rosa had announced in a tweet in May that he was cancer-free but he said on Dec. 10 that a routine checkup showed a relapse of his non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which was first diagnosed in his lower abdomen in 2011.
