Public Lecture
“Back to Africa: Cuban deportees and emancipados to Fernando Poo rewrite island Atlantic histories”
Benita Sampedro Vizcaya, Associate Professor of Colonial Studies at Hofstra University
Wednesday, December 4, 2013
5.00 – 6.30 p.m.
Rutgers University, New Brunswick, College Avenue Campus
Alexander Library, 1st floor, Pane Room
The lecture will attempt to address some of the unfamiliar narratives about travel and deportation from Cuba to Fernando Poo (today Bioko, part of Equatorial Guinea), offering a discursive angle for Caribbean and Atlantic studies that interrogates how re-locating Africa within the Atlantic might reshape our way of narrating islands and the Caribbean experience.
