Jamaica’s Tessanne Chin advances to The Voice top 10

Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin has now advanced into the top 10 of the NBC talent contest “The Voice” in Los Angeles:

The 28-year-old Jamaican was the first member of Adam Levine’s team to power into the next live round of the televised contest, indicating that she received more votes than teammates James Wolpert and Will Champlin who also secured places in the top ten. Other contestants who made it through to the top nine were Cole Vosbury, Caroline Pennell, Matthew Schuler, Austin Jenckes, Jacquie Lee and Ray Boudreaux, while Kat Robichaud snagged a spot in the top 10 after being saved by Twitter voters in the five-minute window just before the end of the show.

On Monday night, Chin delivered a moving rendition of Emeli Sandé’s “My Kind Of Love,” which she dedicated to her husband Michael. Levine, her coach and mentor, said the performance blew his mind. “You are so consistent and the bar is so high that I can never be satisfied,” Levine told the Jamaican songstress.

The Maroon 5 frontman had previously spoken of Chin in similarly glowing terms after her powerful rendition of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross”: “You have such a golden soul and you are a wonderful human being. Your talent is mind-boggling. In my opinion, it doesn’t get better than this, Levine said. A highlight of the nail-biting elimination episode on Tuesday night was a rousing performance of “Hard Day’s Night” performed by Team Levine and featuring Chin. The Jamaican artiste is currently in rehearsal for her next big performance as the Emmy-winning talent competition intensifies. At stake is a record deal with Universal Music Group and US$100,000.

Tessanne comes from a musical family and has been performing since she was six-years-old. A former member of the Jamaican rock band Mile High, noted for its unique rock reggae sound, she also toured for three years with Jimmy Cliff as a back-up singer before launching her solo career. In September it was announced that she would be competing on NBC’s talent show The Voice. All four judges – Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton wanted to mentor her – but she opted for Levine.
