African Diaspora Cine-Club Presents “La Playa, D.C.”

As part of its African Diaspora Cine-Club, Columbia University’s Teachers College presents La Playa, D.C. (2012)—a film by Colombian director Juan Andrés Arango García on Friday, October 25, 2013, at 6:00pm. The screening will take place at 263 Macy, 525 W 120th Street, New York. [The 6:00pm Friday screening is free, but a picture ID is required to enter the building.]

Description: Tomas, an Afro-Colombian teenager who fled the country’s coast pushed out by the war, faces the difficulties of growing up in a city of exclusion and racism. When Jairo, his younger brother and closest friend disappears, Tomas plunges in the streets of the city. His search becomes an initiatory journey that compels him to face his past and to leave aside the influence of his is brothers in order to find his own identity. Through this journey, Tomas reveals a unique perspective of a vibrant and unstable city that, like Tomas, stands on the threshold between what once was and what might be.
