Cornel West to Speak at the University of Puerto Rico

Dr. Cornel West, one of the most renowned public intellectuals in the United States, will visit Puerto Rico in September. His first lecture—”Dialogue among Excluded Communities: Challenges and Hopes for Social Transformation”—will take place on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 7:00pm in Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre (CRA 108) of the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado (CRA) Building, School of Social Sciences, at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras.

The second presentation will be on September 27 at the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras, Ponce de León Avenue and Mariana Bracetti Street.

At the lectures, Dr. West will be joined by Reverend Dr. Samuel Cruz, assistant professor of Religion and Society at the Union Theological Seminary and pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Dr. Cruz is the author of Masked Africanisms: Puerto Rican Pentecostalism (2005) and editor of Christianity and Culture in the City: A Postcolonial Approach (2013).

Dr. West is a professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at the Union Theological Seminary in New York; he holds a PhD from Princeton University. He taught at Harvard before leaving the school after a highly-publicized dispute with then-president Lawrence Summers, and has also spent time teaching at Yale, the University of Paris, and Princeton (Professor Emeritus).

West sometimes refers to himself as a “non-Marxist socialist” largely because of Karl Marx’s (1818 – 1883) rejection of religions. Cornel West is one of the most famous and popular intellectuals in the United States. He has written 20 books and is the author of the bestseller Race Matters (1994) and Democracy Matters (2004). He also published the memoirs entitled Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud (2010) and he has edited 13 other volumes. His contribution to the field of philosophy is grounded in the African American Baptist church, Marxism, pragmatism and transcendentalism. He is also widely known because of his participation in two of the Matrix films.
