Atabal Celebrates 30 Years of Music


Puerto Rico’s Radio Universidad and Hotel Verdanza come together to celebrate Atabal’s 30 years of music making on Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 2:00pm until 6:00pm, with guest singer Ismael Miranda and group Charanga La Criolla.

Atabal (named after a type of drum) is a tropical music group from Puerto Rico that specializes in Afro-Latin rhythms and percussion. The Caribbean group was founded in 1983 as a quartet, but has evolved into a band that is still active today. Atabal turns 30 this year, which will be one of continued music growth, collaborations, and a new celebratory CD. They continue to regale audiences with the sounds of plena, bomba, and salsa, among other Caribbean sounds.

Their recordings include Soneros en la plena (2011); Un junte doble A en la navidad con Andy Montañez (2008); Del Caribe al Brasil–20 aniversario (2006); Con el ritmo del Caribe  (2004); Música Morena (1999); Voces y tambores (1995); and Del Caribe al Brasil (1989).
