Rihanna as Josephine Baker?

Film producer W. Lance Reynolds is thinking of Bajan singer Rihanna to play the iconic performer Josephine Baker in a forthcoming film biopic. It could be interesting, although a few more seasoned actors come to mind. Here are excerpts with a link to the original below:

From her topless “Unapologetic” album cover to her near-nude and very friendly magazine spread with equally scantily-clad Kate Moss, Barbados’ pop princess Rihanna seems to have raised the bar on risqué of late. But if film producer W Lance Reynolds gets his way, the “Talk That Talk” star has only just begun a journey that will follow in the footsteps of iconic Jazz Age star Josephine Baker, who became a legend in her time for performing naked save for a few token props.

The six-time Grammy award-winner is reportedly first choice to play the late American-French performer in a forthcoming film biopic of the trailblazing sex symbol who danced nude except for a tutu of fake bananas in the 1920s. “Rihanna is one of the most talented performers of this millennium and with her unique acting and performing abilities, I have no doubt she will bring Josephine back to life on the big screen,” Reynolds said in a statement.

The 25-year-old made her film debut in the 2012 action movie “Battleship,” adding yet another award to her rapidly expanding collection of accolades. It nevertheless appears that her acting career has some way to go before it sparkles like “Diamonds”. The “We Found Love” star won the 2013 Golden Raspberry Award, or “Razzie,” for Worst Supporting Actress for her role in the film that was hoped would launch her acting career. [. . .]

The legendary Baker, meanwhile, was born in St Louis in 1905, going on to move to France and become a French citizen in 1937. Known as the “Bronze Venus” and the “Black Pearl,” she was an international musical sensation and made history as the first woman of colour to appear in a mainstream film, “Zouzou,” released in 1934.

Although initially reluctant to dance topless, Baker’s legendary sex appeal won her legions of fans and hundreds of marriage proposals. She used her influence to contribute to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and was a key figure in the French Resistance during World War Two.

Noosa Films is reportedly behind the biopic project headed by W Lance Reynolds.
