Ocean Sur Publishers Launches the “América Nuestra” Bookstore in Chile

Ocean Sur Publishers opened a new bookstore called “América Nuestra” on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in Santiago, Chile, with the presence of David Deutschmann, president of the publishing house; Aleida Guevara March, collaborator at the Che Guevara Studies Center in Havana; and Hugo Cristian Fernández González, manager of the new locale. Storytellers, writers, and poets based in Chile, and numerous readers interested in the work of Ernesto “Che” Guevara and texts on Latin American critical thought came together to celebrate this opening.

Located at #60 of the Patio Bellavista [Mall], the launch included the attendance of oral storyteller Patricio Espinoza, writer Emilio López, poet Carmen Andrea Mantilla, the LiberArte Musical Collective, and representatives of the journal Punto Final, whose former team members, such as co-founder Mario Díaz Barrientos, contributed to the rescue of the diary of “El Che” in Bolivia with their “Operation Tía Victoria.” [Mario Díaz was responsible for taking the diary clandestinely from Bolivia to Cuba.]

Before she cut the ribbon, Hugo Cristian Fernández said to Aleida Guevara, “I don’t have a machete to cut the tape as your father would have done, but may that machete, used to clear sugarcane, be represented by these scissors. From this library we will continue the work and thought of your father, our Che, to be sown among the youth and the people of Chile.”

Then she autographed many books for the attendees, particularly Evocación. Mi vida al lado del Che [Evocation. My Life at Che’s Side] written by her mother, Aleida March.
