ICS Lecture: “Work and Working Class Struggle in Puerto Rican New York, 1950-1960”

garmentAs part of Conferencias Caribeñas 12 Series, the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras invites the academic community and the public at large to the lecture “Work and Working Class Struggle in Puerto Rican New York, 1950-1960” by Dr. Aldo Lauria Santiago (Department of Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies, Rutgers University).

The activity will be held on Thursday, April 18, from 1:00 to 3:30pm, at the Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre in the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building (CRA 108), School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP.

Description: This lecture will outline a section of a larger study on the class-inflected history of Puerto Ricans in New York City between 1917 and 1970. Dr. Lauria Santiago’s approach centers on work, class formation, social mobility, and labor, but inevitably it also reaches other critical themes such as community formation, politics and identity. He will discuss the experiences of migrant and second generation Puerto Ricans with the industrial workplace and unions during the 1950s. He will also review basic elements of life in NYC including the legacies from the first two generations up to 1945, the demographics of migration in the post-war years (1945-7), New York’s industrial landscape during the 1950s, the City’s cold-war stained social democratic, labor-based polity, and militant industrial unionism. The lecture will then discuss Puerto Rican experiences of work and integration into unions through four themes: labor markets and mobility, union membership, militant unionism, and the fight against corrupt unions.
