The following article in Dominican Today announces that the authorities in the Dominican Republic will enforce a pre-existing law in order to stop dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s son from exalting his father’s memory.
The efforts of Ramfis Dominguez Trujillo to enhance the figure of his grandfather, dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, found this week a retaining wall when the Attorney General’s Office said there will be enforced the existing Law 5880 from 1962 which prohibits any activity that praises the image of that family or his regime.
The measure responds to the request made by the Federation of Patriotic Foundations to Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito, who instructed all prosecutors in the country to take the necessary measures to prohibit all forms tending to exalt, promote or reclaim the image of the dictator.
Trujillo´s 30 years in power is considered one of the bloodiest ever in the Americas. It has been estimated that Trujillo’s tyrannical rule was responsible for the death of more than 50,000 people.
