Anya Ayoung-Chee has been busy showing her designs all over the world, as Bobie-lee Dixon reports in this article for Trinidad´s Guardian.
Since she won Project Runway’s ninth season in 2011, Anya Ayoung-Chee has been busy travelling the world and showcasing her collections, at various fashion events. She used the US$100,000 she won on Project Runway to begin her own line, Pilar.
Today, Ayoung-Chee will have her first Caribbean showing since winning Project Runway, when she launches Carnival of Colour at Adam Smith Square in Woodbrook.
Carnival of Colour was showcased in London, New York and Johannesburg last year.
Ayoung-Chee told the T&T Guardian the Carnival-inspired line will feature a “combination of silks, woven, knits and she boasted that the collection is all made in T&T, something she’s especially proud of.
“The majority of this collection was made by fashion students at UTT,” Ayoung-Chee said.
“Caribbean fashion is becoming so popular across the globe and so the purpose of this showing is to highlight the creative and innovative way of fusing fashion and Carnival, because the season is more than music and mas, it is about the way we express ourselves through what we wear.”
The former Miss T&T/Universe representative said she chose to do the showing during the Carnival season because it is probably the one time of year when the entire world is watching T&T and enjoying what was created right here, so there is no better opportunity.
The show, which is free to the public, will begin at 8 pm and will feature performances by popular soca artistes. The designs from Acara Acraea, Ayoung-Chee’s section from Tribe’s 2013 presentation Butterflies, Beasts and Bacchanal will be on display as well.
She thanked sponsors of the event including bmobile, Junior Sammy, Shoe Frenzy, Hair by Bally, Spa Esencia Hyatt Regency Trinidad and Rent-A-Light Lighting Systems.
Ayoung-Chee also said that her charity all-inclusive event, Anya The Fete, will take place on February 9 at her St Clair residence. Part proceeds of the fete will go to her children’s charity—Tallman Foundation.
