54th Edition of Havana’s Casa de las Américas Literary Prize Inaugurated

The 54th edition of Havana’s Casa de las Américas Literary Prize was inaugurated on Tuesday at the institution’s Che Guevara Hall, with a declaration read by its president Roberto Fernández Retamar that recalled that Latin American and Caribbean integration in the sphere of culture continues to be the raison d’etre of the Prize.

During the presentation of the jury, Fernández Retamar stated that the willingness of the peoples and of many governments in the region favors alliances like Alba, Mercosur, Unasur and Celac, just to mention a few, which made the dreams of Simón Bolívar, José Martí and other Latin American heroes come true.

After the inaugural ceremony, attended by Politburo members Miguel Díaz-Canel Bérmudez and Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, Vice-president of the Council of Ministers and President of the National Assembly of the People’s Power, respectively, and by Culture Minister Rafael Bernal, the members of the jury traveled to their regular venue at the Jagua Hotel in Cienfuegos, where they will consider their verdict until January 31, the day when the winners of the 54th edition, in its six categories, will be announced.
