Radio Vieques Needs Help

Robert Rabin and the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV), together with diverse sectors of the community and grass roots organizations in the Eastern Region (Ceiba, Culebra, Naguabo, Vieques) of Puerto Rico have worked very hard these past few months to set up a new public radio station as a tool in the continued work for justice and peace in that area: Radio Vieques WVQR 90.1FM.

In the context of the 10th anniversary of the cessation of bombing on Vieques island (May 1, 2003), Radio Vieques will play an important role in the community’s efforts towards improved health, environment, and sustainable development in this part of the Puerto Rican archipelago.

To comply with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), that awarded the CRDV license to operate frequency 90.1FM, Radio Vieques must begin transmission by next June 30. Therefore, the team needs to acquire and install equipment—antenna and transmitter on Culebra, main studio on Vieques— to achieve this goal. The approximate cost for this is around $150,000. The committee and concerned citizens recently began an intense fund raising campaign with support from singers/song writers in Puerto Rico and the United States.

Earlier this month, they launched the first volume of the virtual album, Artists for Vieques, with the special participation of Calle 13 (who donated the song “La bala,” the bullet), Zoraida Santiago, Tito Auger, Roy Brown, Willy Nelson, and an impressive list of local and international artists. Monies from online sales will help build Radio Vieques. To promote the purchase of Artists for Vieques, the committee printed 20,000 flyers with related information. They need our help to cover this cost ($1310.75). The committee appreciates any donation toward this printing expense, which is an investment in Radio Vieques and, thereby, in the healing of the Vieques community.

You may send donations for Radio Vieques to: CRDV, P.O. Box 1424, Vieques, Puerto Rico 00765
