Runners from 35 Countries to Participate in Havana Marathon

More than 250 runners from 35 countries have confirmed their participation in the XXVI Havana International Marathon (Marabana), scheduled for today (November 18, 2012) in the Cuban capital. Carlos Gattorno, general manager of the Marabana-Maracuba Project, said that athletes were confirmed from South Korea, Australia, China, Japan, Mexico, United States, Spain, Germany, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Colombia, Ecuador, among others, to participate along with Cubans.

Gattorno said the preliminary figure of participants amounted to 2,750 runners, including Cubans, who can register their entries until November 10. He added they will use the same electronic timing used in the 2011 edition in the three distances covered — 10 kilometres, half marathon (21 km and 97.5 metres) and marathon (42 km and 195 m). This is possible thanks to the collaboration of Maraton Popular de Madrid (MAPOMA), Air France, and Cubadeportes, said Gattorno.

The sport manager announced that Maracuba, the largest event of simultaneous participation in Cuba, will take place on Saturday 17 and will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Federation of University Students and the International Students’ Day. Marabana will mark the foundation of San Cristóbal de La Habana and the National Day of Physical Culture and Sports.
