Howard interviews Juan González on a new documentary Harvest of Empire, based on his classic book documenting the history of Latinos in America. The movie screening opens September 28 and runs through October 4, 2012, at the Quad Cinema 34 W. 13th Street in New York City.
Juan González (born 1947 in Ponce, Puerto Rico) is a progressive broadcast journalist and investigative reporter. He has been a journalist for more than 30 years and a columnist at the New York Daily News since 1987. He is the co-host of the award-winning daily radio and television news program, Democracy Now!
A graduate of Columbia University, González is one of the founding members of the Young Lords, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. He has won many accolades, including the George Polk Award for his investigative reporting. In 2008, The National Association of Hispanic Journalists inducted González into the organization’s Hall of Fame. He was also named by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of America’s most influential Hispanics and he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispanic Academy of Media Arts and Sciences. He has written four books including his latest, News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media.
