The Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (UPR-RP) invites the public to a panel discussion “Culturas transgresoras: el contrabando en el Caribe, siglo XVII al siglo XXI” [Transgressive Cultures: Contraband in the Caribbean, from the XVII to the XXI Century]. Dr. Celestino Araúz Monfonte (University of Panama) will present “Contrabando, corrupción institucional y hegemonía mercantil británica en el Istmo de Panamá (1740-1848)”; Dorian J. López León (Ph.D. candidate, History, UPR-RP) presents “Contrabando benévolo o contrabando hegemónico? el caso de Baltasar de Andino en la ciudad de San Juan de Puerto Rico, 1683-1688;” and Dr. Héctor R. Feliciano Ramos (Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-San Germán), will present “No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol – Del contrabando al narcotráfico: panorama sobre la ilegalidad y la criminalidad en la historia de Puerto Rico.” Dr. Antonio Gaztambide Géigel (Social Sciences, UPR-RP) will be the moderator.
The activity will be held on Tuesday, October 2, from 1:00 to 3:30pm at the Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre in the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building (CRA 108), School of the Social Sciences, UPR-RP.
