On June 8, 2012, starting at 6:30pm, the Nuyorican Poets Café presents poet Mariposa with “¡Puerto Rico nació en mí!,” a poetry and music kickoff to the Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend. Dedicated to Oscar Lopez Rivera and hosted by Frank Perez and Mariposa, the event will also feature DJ Mar Y Soul, Bomba Yo, Mahina Movement, Stacey Toro, Tania Ramirez, and others. The Nuyorican Poets Café is located at 236 East 3rd Street in New York, New York.
Mariposa (María Teresa Fernández) is a third generation Puerto Rican, born and raised in The Bronx, whose work demonstrates pride in her Nuyorican culture and heritage. She holds a BA in Women’s Studies with a concentration in English literature and an MA in Education from New York University. Mariposa is the author of Born Bronxeña: Poems on Identity, Love and Survival. She has also published articles and poetry in numerous publications. Her poetry has been featured on the critically acclaimed HBO Latino series, “Habla Ya” and the HBO documentary “Americanos: Latino Life in the US,” produced by Edward James Olmos, Nick Athas, and Time Warner.
