The Hemingway International Yacht Club (HIYC) of Cuba and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) of the United States agreed in Havana to take action to preserve the ecosystems and marine resources shared by the two countries, the Cuban news agency Prensa Latina reports.
According to the Agreement of Friendship, signed at the HIYC, both institutions committed to joining forces to preserve biodiversity of sea waters and coasts in the Mexican Gulf and the Caribbean.
Comodore José Miguel Diaz Escrich, of the HIYC, stated that the text does not imply any economic or judicial commitment by the parties, but one of honor for the preservation of the planet’s oceans.
In order to achieve that goal, both parties will work to re-establish the fish population affected by overfishing and will share scientific information.
They will also cooperate in marine research and the collection and processing of data to ensure the protection of fishing, marine and coast resources
