Rutgers University’s Critical Caribbean Studies invites the public to a talk by Dr. Kwame Nimako (University of Amsterdam) who will speak about his new book, The Dutch Atlantic: Slavery, Abolition and Emancipation (co-authored with Glenn Willemsen; London: Pluto Press, 2011). This lecture will take place on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, from 12:00 to 2:00pm at the Critical Caribbean Studies Center (formerly Center for Latin American Studies) located at Corwin B 106 Nichol Avenue, Building B, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Description: Spanning the era of Atlantic slavery, “The Dutch Atlantic investigates the Dutch involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and assesses the historical consequences of this for contemporary European society.” Nimako’s work contributes to both an historical conversation of Dutch economic participation in the early Caribbean but also raises important questions about Caribbean diasporic communities and the legacies of colonialism in the West.
